One of those Bizarre Things you just can't Explain - Park #12

As we headed north towards Kings Canyon National Park we stopped at an overlook, one of the only places we could get cell service. Ashley, my daughter, had a friend from home who had moved to California and lived nearby. The two friends had been texting back and forth all morning when they could get signal and now we were running out of time to meet. Depending on where Ashley's friend was, we could be waiting for hours to meet up with her as the park entrances were spread out over miles and miles.

Stopped at the overlook, I got out of the car to take pictures while Ashley called her friend to try to determine her location.

I thought the view was beautiful, but when I came around the corner, I encountered this.

It was like a city of rock people! Little rock towers everywhere. It was so cool! I made a rock person to leave something of me behind.

As I walked back to the car waiting to hear how long the wait would be, there, parked a few feet from our car, was Ashley's friend. We had unknowingly both stopped at the same overlook to call. Of the hundreds and hundreds of miles of national park we almost parked next to each other. How crazy was that?!

Now that we had miraculously met up (welcome to the blog Janae!) we carpooled into King's Canyon to cross off park #12 from the list.

We decided to take Mineral King, a 25 mile winding, steep road with twists and turns down into the valley. We drove along the King River stopping occasionally to take pictures next to the fast running water.

If you double click on the photos the pictures are clearer.

We drove to the end of the road to get to the visitor's center to have lunch only to find out we had missed lunch by 10 minutes. No problem! There was an excellent camping grocery store there and we loaded up and ate next to the river.

There is something special about watching water move. You could stare at it forever. We didn't have forever unfortunately as we needed to make that 25 mile winding trek back up the mountain to drop off Janae and then head north to Yosemite National Park where we had camping reservations later that night.

One more stop for pictures....come on girls, you can make it.

A piece of cake!

After we said our goodbyes, the three amigos hit the road headed for Yosemite and again chasing the daylight. You won't want to miss this next park. It was amazing!
